John H. Thacher was born in 1873 in Kansas City, Missouri. He received a B.A. in 1895 from Princeton University. He married Edith Gilman in 1906, and had the following children: John (1908), Edith (1910), and Nicholas (1915.) In 1912, he joined the Missouri National Guard, and on October 6, 1915 he was commissioned a Captain in the Missouri National Guard, 1st Missouri Field Artillery Battalion.
